Did you know that I have a YouTube channel?

I LOVE making videos!!! This was my first one ever. I taught myself to record and edit them with my lap top in 2012.

This is one the first one ever!

I was so excited to have my channel be made a YouTube partner about 5 years ago. That means the videos are more visible and also monetized. I don't make tons of money off it them, none at all really, but its just a good thing to be a partner.

You will learn 2 things about me in these videos. I like share knowledge about hair/makeup and my business Also, I like to laugh. A lot. If that is your thing, you will like it around here. If not, thanks for stopping by.

Soon after we were expecting our first baby!

So I made a fun video to announce that were expecting and to announce the gender. Both are below. Please watch and enjoy!

After that baby, came another one. A girl, right behind the boy. Oh, what fun we are having BUT things had to take a pause. Things like video content creation.

I still did a few, like this one....

And this one is a great one that is on my website for the studio!

Now that the kiddos are a little bit older, one of my goals for 2018 was to create more video content to share some things I am excited about this year.

There is just one little problem!

YouTube just notified me that my channel will no longer be eligible for partnership status if I don't meet the minimum views and subscriber requirement. So, I need your help. First, subscribe.

Then watch some more videos. A few of my favorites are here. Leave me a comment if there is something you want me to make a video about!

This is the first video I ever did wardrobe production on, all by myself! I am so proud of how this turn out!

This one was SO fun too!

I've got more with little makeup and hair tips too! You can help me out a lot by watching these, then I will get this channel more organized and send you more.

Let me know what you want to see!!!

Today I choose the work I want to do.

This did not happen overnight.

In 2001, I was working retail in the Mall of Louisiana, at an Aveda Salon. I was still learning and sharpening my makeup skills, and learning to work with different types of people.  I can't tell you how valuable that was. After graduating from college and the Aveda Institute, I moved to Los Angeles to start my career as a professional stylist is 2004.

Fast forward to today, 2017, I am a full time, self employed stylist who work on jobs that I truly love. Getting paid (well) to do work that I love is really a dream come true!

People ask me all of the time, how I got into this work and how I get to work on these cool jobs.

Part of it is years of experience and crafting a unique skill set. But one thing that you need to be able to do this work is your own kit!

You can do the same thing!

I will show you exactly how I did it.

Now the time in between 2001 and now, there was a lot of growing pains. I learned A LOT of lessons. Most of those lessons I learned the hard (expensive) way. And I always wished there was just a book I could read, or a class I could take!

Today, there are so many more resources where you can learn makeup skills and more.  I developed a resource based on all of the experience that I have picked up in the last 15 years that has allowed me to work on projects that make my heart happy and pay my bills!

This is the shortcut that I wished that I had when I started!

(Secret truth)

I have been working on this course for a LONG time. The content has been created but I was dragging my feet, afraid that it wouldn't be good enough. But that is not true, because the truth is that this is what I did to be successful and I have shared it with many other people who have also become successful. I challenged myself, as a birthday gift to myself, to put it out in the month of October.  So here it is! You can find more info here.

P.S. This whole kit building process is a lot of work, its a slow grind. Im not going to lie. That is how you know its worth it. Creating this course was also a lot of work but you can tell from the short video below, we had a lot of laughs while creating this content for you. I hope you enjoy it as much as Cassie (of Cass and Co Films) and I did creating this labor of love.

Do you have questions? A lot of people asked some already that I answered on a special page. You can even watch the Facebook live to see me answer them! Or just read them yourself. Whatever floats your boat.

Why you NEED mascara for photos!

Its no secret that I love me some mascara!

I will shout it from the rooftops, all day, everyday. Everyone needs to find the mascara that opens up the windows to their soul. And I found mine in Younique Fiber Lash mascara.

Recently they developed a new, one step mascara that is awesome and can be used along with the Fiber Lash for extra impact. But it can also be used alone! The also released a Lash Serum treatment that is ah-mazing at the same time. (And I'm doing a give away for that, see below!)

Clients, friends and photographers ask me all of the time what mascara I recommend. I tell them Younique because that is what I use on clients and that is what I use on myself, everyday!

Why do photographers ask? Because it makes such a HUGE difference in photos. So even if you are a minimal (or zero) makeup wearer, mascara is a must for making your eyes POP and connect with the camera.

Check out these photos that my family's photographer, Sarah Kane Photography, snapped for me in her studio one day.  When Sarah asked me to get some tips together for her client prep guide, wearing mascara was one of my top recommendations!

If you know me and see me regularly, you know that I am often seen with no makeup on. Or you can also find me with the bare minimum, which for me is a little blush, cream shadow and mascara. I know, I know that is a full face for some. Then a few times a week, I go ALL out. Full face! Drag queen status, my personal favorite!

In this photo, I am not wearing much color on my eyes or any liner at all.  I really wanted the impact of the mascara to be seen.

A few years ago, I was having trouble with my mascara flaking. It was happening with every brand that I tried! Within 30 min of application, I would have dark smudges and flakes under my eyes!  It was actually a client of mine who said that she was using Younique because it was the only thing that didn't smudge under her eyes. I decided to give it a try.

It was then that I decided to try it out and because I wanted the free shipping that comes with orders over $100. I had no idea they had other products. The mascara, as you can see, was a such a win for me, then I moved on to trying other products.

Another new option they have is that you can create your own bespoke eyeshadow palette!

What exactly happens during a keratin treatment?

A few weeks back, I blogged about the new Liquid Keratin treatments that I have been doing. If you missed it, check it out here.

And if you read the last post, having the proper take home products is crucial to the success. You must must must use a sulfate free shampoo.

In that last post, I mention that before your keratin treatment, you should get yourself a fresh trim. Why? Because the keratin seals the hair and you don't want your frayed ends to be locked into place. It will be a mess!

Then after the keratin treatment you will not shampoo for 72 hours. When you do shampoo you will use your Smooth Again wash 3 times to get the treatment completely out.

Here is a quick little video with how the whole process goes down.....

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to reach out to me on social media or via email at emily@reallifebeauty.com.

Not ready to book yours yet but want to come in and ask some questions? You can book a consultation and we can take a few minutes to see if this is the right treatment for your hair and lifestyle.

Family Portrait Planning

Its no secret that time is flying by! I feel like we just rang in the new year but before you knew it summer started.  Now it's August and  we are thinking back to school. And what comes next?!?!

Fall family portrait sessions and thinking about our holiday cards. Then here we are back to ringing in a new year. Whoa, ya'll, slow down the clock! Am I right!?!

So what does that have to do with you and me, or hair/makeup?

Sarah Kane Photography, my family's go to pro for documenting all of our seasons since I was pregnant with Sloane, announced that her fall mini sessions opened on Monday, July 31.

I had my alarm clock and reminders to snag mine. You need to get yours while they last because last year the day they went on sale the time slots on the day I wanted were slipping away as my husband I discussed which would pick and we were doing it within 2 hours of her opening them up!

You have probably seen this view from my shampoo bowl. Its a good one, if I do say so myself:)

We are scheduled! For December 2nd at 2pm!

Ok so you have the date and time scheduled, great! Congrats, you didn't wait until the last minute. Do you know what else you shouldn't wait for? Thinking about your hair and makeup! And your wardrobe!

The summer is a quieter time around the salon because so many people are out on vacation or don't have child care but September thru December book up really fast and I don't have as much wiggle room. When it gets super busy, I can rarely fit in a last minute, week of request for an appointment. And heaven forbid, one of us has an emergency.

When should you book your appointment for cut/color/brow shaping?

My recommendation is to have your appointment about a week and a half to two weeks out from the day your portraits are scheduled. If you are trying a new stylist, I would make sure to get your hair done at least once before the appointment just before your photo session.  Click here to book now!

You could book a styling session the day of your photos but I wouldn't recommend having your cut/color done the day of your photos. That would make you too rushed for time.

Depending on your schedule and how much you believe in your own ability, you could either have me style your hair and/or do your makeup OR you could do the Beauty School Drop In sessions. In these sessions you will learn how to do your own makeup and style your hair for everything from your day to day look or a special occasion like photos.

If you need any help with this, don't hesitate to reach out. We can work backwards on the calendar from the date of your portrait session to figure out what appointments you need and get that all set so you don't have to worry!

Don't forget that its not just you in these photos, although usually its you that is last on your list.

Ladies, we have got to work on this! Remember to schedule appointments for the rest of your family too. Just click here and set those up! Haircuts at least 2 weeks out for your husband and kids. Make your man feel special by getting him set up with a neck trim a day or so before the photos so he is looking nice and tidy.

The icing on the cake is wardrobe. Styling a look for your whole family that is color coordinated but not too matchy matchy can be overwhelming for a lot of people. Look no further than the incredibly talented Joanna Avant for help in that department. She has written a few blog posts about prep here and here. She is also available for hire to take care of this task for you.
